- ARLB077 Morse exemption denied
-
- The FCC has denied a petition that proposed exemptions from Morse
- code exams for people age 65 and older.
-
- Guy A. Matzinger, KB7PNQ, argued in his petition that old age
- results in diminished faculties, and equated those people 65 and
- older with the severely disabled in terms of passing a CW exam.
- He proposed the exemption for speeds above 5 WPM.
-
- The FCC said that similar petitions had been denied in the past,
- because the current Amateur Radio license structure was based on
- ''the desires of the amateur service community,'' based on thousands
- of comments on previous petitions. The Commission also noted that
- its rules already provide for Morse code exemptions for certain
- recognized disabilities.
-
- Matzinger introduced the results of a survey he conducted that said
- 63 percent of those he surveyed supported such an exemption. The
- survey, the FCC said, provided an age profile of those surveyed but
- did not say how many people were surveyed.
-
- Although the petition got the usual public notice, the FCC said it
- received no comments on it.
-
- Matzinger is a 67-year-old Technician class licensee who lives in
- Cheney, Washington.

-
- If you hold a Technician class license issued before March 16, 1991,
- then you automatically are a Technician licensee with HF privileges
- (a ''Tech Plus'').
-
- In some recent instances the FCC has processed the renewal or
- modification of such a Tech Plus license but has mistakenly issued a
- ''Technician'' (no-code) license. (Since June 8, 1994, new and renewed
- Tech Plus licenses have been clearly labeled as such).
-
- If this has happened to you, do the following:
-
- Write to the FCC, explaining the situation, including your current
- license status, with effective date. Include copies of both your
- ''before'' and ''after'' licenses.
-
- If you no longer have either a copy or the original of your previous
- license, say so in your letter.
-
- Send this to FCC, 1270 Fairfield Road, Gettysburg PA 17325-7245 (or
- fax 717-337-1541). Keep copies of all your correspondence with the
- FCC.
-
- Expect the matter to take four to six weeks to be resolved. In the
- meantime, you may continue to exercise ''Tech Plus'' privileges.

- : he turns the computer and monitor on, the static and hiss level on his

-
- : Questions:
- : How can we get rid of this?
- : 1) Would something like a lead box around the actual CB radio eliminate
- : this?
-
- Lead wouldn't be a good choice. It might shield from Gamma rays, but as
- a conductor it isn't all that great. To prevent RF infiltration, you want
- the best conductor you can get - usually copper- or silver-based paint or
- braid to seal the enclosure.
-
- : 2) Would a lead box around the computer eliminate this?
-
- No. You'd never be able to move it again, though.
-
- : 3) Is it the antenna's fault (we're using a homemade 1/2 wave dipole
- : mounted vertically)?
-
- It's the antenna's fault (possibly) in that it's too close to the
- computer. If you've got the coax and space, move it outside and away
- from your computer. If you've got bad connections/open spots in the
- coax, you're asking for trouble, too. What kind of coax is he using?
- Decent stuff, or Rat Shack RG-58? The better the shielding on the coax,
- the less signal infiltration you'll get.
-
- : 4) Any suggestions as to where I can find sheets of lead (if that's the
- : answer) and how to put it up?
-
- Again, try to get some copper paint and braid to seal the cabinet. Ask
- around for suggestions - I don't know of any brand names.
-
-
- : The interference is not coming specifically from the monitor or computer,
- : but both.
-
- Yes, that's correct. Usually the worst radiators are cables connecting
- pieces. Try ferrite beads/donuts on them, sometimes that'll help.
-
- : Is the interference (apparently caused by electro-magnetic fields from
- : the monitor and computer, right?) getting picked up by the antenna, the
- : radio itself, or both?
-
- It could be both, depending on how well (or poorly) they're shielded.
- Try connecting a PL-259 with a 47ohm resistor (or a good dummy load) across
- the CB. Listen and see if you've still got interference. If so, the radio
- itself is getting RF into it. If not, it's either the coax or the antenna's
- proximity to the computer.

-
- In transformers using high-permeability ferrite cores, it doesn't make
- much difference. The object is for the flux created by one turn to
- link with all the other turns. When the permeability is high, the
- flux is pretty well confined to the core, so the linking takes place
- regardless of where the turns are.
-
- With low-permeability materials such as type 2 or 6 powdered iron, the
- flux isn't as confined, so pushing the turns together noticeably
- increases the inductance. Some measurements I did on an inductor of
- 8 turns on type 2 powdered iron showed a 43% increase in inductance
- when evenly-space turns were pushed together. The Q ended up about the
- same as an inductor of equal inductance with more turns evenly spaced
- around the core. If you have a second winding on this type of core, the
- amount of coupling between windings will be affected greatly by their
- positions on the core.

- Subject: Voltage in France
-
- The voltage in continental Europe is 220V, spread over the two wires. That
- is, it is 110V per phase with respect to ground. You cant really use 110V
- from a phase and ground because there are trip circuits looking at leakage
- current and turn the main CBs off (only in modern houses however).
-
- The frequency is 50Hz.
-
- I built a house in Brussels and had it wired with two separate circuits,
- both 220V and 110V. The 110V, is based on a transformer of 1KW that divides
- 220V by 2. I then get 110V at 50Hz. The only effect this has is to cause
- certain 60Hz devices to burn, namely, and this is the only case, little wall
- plug chargers that are normally supplied with HTs (my Kenwood TH-21 charger
- burned). This is because at 60Hz less power is dissipated than at 50Hz,
- therefore the material the charger is made off can be less expensive thus
- burning at 50Hz (more heat).
-
- There is no other difference these days, as most household items dont use
- the powerline frequency for anything (cheap Radio Shack power timers
- excempted - they use the 60Hz for timing purposes).
-
- So what you do is to take a 110/220V transformer with you. They cost less
- than half price in the US. As an example, a 110V/220V 100W transformer was
- $35.

- : I have not been able to find a match to the coaxial power connector on
- : the top of this radio. My Radio Shack either doesn't stock it or was out
- : of stock. If anyone knows where this plug can be obtained at *reasonable*
- : cost please let me know
-
- I bought one at HRO Sunnyvale for $7 with 4 feet of wire attached.

- More or less. As long as we're legal, I think it's always their fault.

- Really? I don't remember that debate. I've got a budy that I talk to
- on 40 meters every week who seams to be an authority on amateur radio.
- He's been licensed since the 30's and knows all about the rules. I'll
